The Douglas County Shelter accepts stray dogs during business hours. We do not accept personal pets. We do not have facilities for cats. Stray cats can be accepted at the Champaign County Humane Society.  We are active in C.A.R.E. (Companion Animal Resources & Education) and work with the CIAR (Central IL Small Animal Rescue) for dogs that are not adopted in the 2 - 3 day time period.

For stray dog pickups in Tuscola, call the city building 253-2112 or the police 253-2351.  Outside of Tuscola, please call the animal control office.  On the weekend, please call the sheriff's office 217-253-2913.  In citys, please call the police department and they will contact the city dogcatcher. Dogs are available for adoption 7 days after coming into the pound. They are kept for 3 days for adoption.  Any dog can be seen and inquired about before the 7 days are up. If you have lost your pet be sure to check the pound.

All dogs are required by law to have their Rabies vaccine (1year or 3year), be registered and wear the Rabies tag on their collar. Dogs must be on a leash at all times, or other proper restraint, under the direct control of the owner .

All dog bites must be reported to the animal control office.

Adoption Fees. The fee for adoption of dogs is $65.00 (includes microchip).  If the dog has not been spay or neutered, it must be after adoption and a refundable $15.00 deposit is required, so an un-neutered/spay pet will cost $50.00.

Pets that are owned and claimed have a $35.00 impoundment fee and daily charge of $10.00 per night that the dog is in the pound.  Other fees applicable for non registration, roaming at large, or not wearing a tag may be applied according to the case.

"Adoptions of the pound animals has risen dramatically thanks to the local papers and the Tuscola web-site"  Dr. Sally Foote.
